The Seetalstrasse in Emmen - today with an inner-city motorway junction, 4 to 5 lanes throughout and daily 20,000 to 25,000 cars - is considered one of the most difficult main roads in Switzerland. The concept considers the high traffic and urban space requirements. The road remains an important superordinate traffic axis (public transport, car, bicycle and pedestrian traffic). However, the motorway junction is replaced by a compact street crossing and a large park. With green avenues and various small squares, the space will be further greened, unsealed and upgraded. Traffic in particular is seen here as an urban planning opportunity. The vision is not a utopian, traffic-calmed green space, but a dynamic, highly frequented, representative urban space. The good visability, the high frequencies and the easy access are specifically used for a qualitative, economic development.
